Conference_Vienna_Femcities 2017_Women’s rights, religion and refugees, European cities between welcome culture and rejection

  • Vienna Rathaus 1 Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz Wien, Wien, 1010 Austria (map)
(c) Femcities

Women and human rights are a central concern for us as women and gender equality departments in the FemCities network. What are the discussions about women and women's rights in (European) cities in connection with refugees? Who is included, who is excluded and who is silent? What are the positions of gender experts and why? What are difficult topics that we as feminists come across, what are our blind spots?

Discussions often tend to become very emotional. They might trigger fear or lead to the assumption of wanting to rescue the migrant woman.

Are there "phases of integration", of arriving in a society and of the society itself? Are there any women-specific aspects or differences specific to women with refugee experiences and is this knowledge relevant for a city, for policy measures or for the development of programmes? What do representatives of communities say? What are the possible courses of action in cities?

Keynote speakers: Prof.in Elisabeth Holzleithner und Viola Raheb, MA, PhD
